IT'S NOT A THREAT. IT'S A PROMISE.

Updated: Apr 4

This is the letter of any given Idiot. Idiocy has many faces, and here it shows one that seems simple but becomes tangled as soon as you dig deeper. We know that war is a far more complex matter and that the relationship between power and the powerful eludes the simplifications of this brief and popular letter. And yet, behind the fear that drives any given Idiot, behind its analysis,

can we honestly say that there isn't a fragment of truth?

The "them" is the favorite tool of every successful politician; war at the gates of Europe and the Middle East, the new frontier of Rearm Europe: doesn't it resonate within you? Doesn't it make you tune in to the anguish and the possibility that the catastrophic scenario is closer than ever? If we deny that every political act also speaks the language of the irrational if we reject the idea that emotions shape consensus, then yes, we are genuinely simplifying reality.

Our promise is to commit ourselves to building the conditions in which a letter like this will never be necessary. We reject war and violence, but above all, we reject this increasingly pervasive atmosphere—an atmosphere that, almost arrogantly, claims the necessity of such a conflict.

This promise is an invitation to all of us, especially to those who will find themselves directly involved, to be determined and united in the greatest battle of our lives: preventing all these tragedies weighing upon the world from expanding into The War—the one which, as Einstein once told us in one of his few genuinely original quotes, will undoubtedly be the last of this glorious civilization.

Smoke from burning oil fields set alight by Islamic State militants fills the air in Al Qayyarah, northern Iraq. Dear politicians, present and future, this message is directed at you, who so easily forget those who, at the end of all your calculations, grant you the possibility of your arrogance. We are why your seats are so comfortable, your meals are rich, and your homes are so clean. Your attempts to push us into misery, forcing us to turn against each other to seek the favor of your masters, will not save you forever. There is one message you will find us united on: the future of this world will not be stained as the past was, in throwing the planet once again into the flames of a fratricidal global war.

With what courage, governments of the world, do you send your youth—the future of both you and us—to the slaughter? How small must your horizons be, how much cowardice must be hidden in your every breath? And all this, for what?

There is no need for too many words—actions will speak for themselves.

Traitors to the motherland?

Perfect! We are all more than happy to take on that title. After all, it is only the traitors of life, the betrayers of everything great in humanity, who label us as such. You, the foolish puppets, willing to do anything your dear rulers command just to sell a few more weapons and remain in first class a little longer.

We will not go kill other poor souls who, simply by being born on the other side of imaginary lines drawn by greedy, spoiled men, are declared our enemies.

We will not bomb the history of our brothers just because their passports are a different color.

We will not go massacre children because their ancestors gave a different name to the same god.

And dear politicians, this is not a threat—it's a promise.

Suppose you ever put us in a position where we are forced to go and sow hatred against other desperate human beings like us—In other words, before stepping onto a battlefield where we will be torn apart by drones and poisoned by white phosphorus rains. In that case, we will bring that very hell, that same destruction, into your homes, your cars, your hotels, your chalets, your government halls, and your hospital beds.

We will take this destruction to your associates, to your friends, to all those who send others to die with ease and indifference.

Trust us—your lives are worth far less than ours.

Life to life, and death to those who sow it. We reject war, but we are not afraid to fight for peace.

A huge thank you to an incredible person and a great photographer, Martyn Aim.

Many of us were lucky enough to meet him in an unlikely and unforgettable place.

He is currently in Belgrade. Supporting this kind of independent journalism is essential.

You would help him a lot by following him, as a few months ago, he lost access to his original account and had to start over.
